» CIVILIANS.

The meat of the game, and of the world! These are people who fall under any category other than those mentioned on this page. Teachers, bums, cooks, accountants, whatever. If they're not a part of a special "faction", they are a civilian. Have at it!

» SPACE COWBOYS.

The Cowboys are essentially advanced, real-life entertainment for the rich and powerful in New Washington City. They work together and are an extremely tight-knit group, almost like a circus that travels and works in unison. Cowboy battles are not staged or fake, but they are arranged. They occur in real life and have real consequences, but their clients call in to arrange the date, time, nature of the fight, and the location. The cowboys deal in spaghetti western-style street fights, train-jackings, bar brawls, and shootouts, each on a different pay scale.

Cowboying is technically illegal, with contracts made under the table, but despite this is generally accepted by people as a part of society. Anyone not involved with the fight is strictly off-limits, and in addition to repercussions from law enforcement if anyone is injured or killed, the cowboys are vindictive of those that step outside of their self-imposed regulations.

The cowboys use a variety of weapons: regular revolvers, laser revolvers, and light sabers, the last of which is given to rookie cowboys when they win their first fight. The cowboys have a headquarters with offices, living facilities, and even a secretary, but finding the HQ or even finding a way to contact them can be a difficult task. Usually in order to arrange a fight, a referral and many references are required. Similarly, cowboys can be recruited (although rarely, as this requires an extreme demonstration of badassery), but usually come into the fold through mutual connections and word of mouth. Others are simply born into the lifestyle.

» BURLESQUERS.

Burlesque has made a huge resurgence as a form of entertainment all over the world, but particularly in NWC--there are permanent clubs all over the city, as well as three international acts who tour the globe. Megara Von Teese, Dita's descendant, is the so-called "Queen of Burlesque", and revived the entertainment form. She's a global sensation, and the head of the EBF (Earth Burlesque Foundation), as well as the headliner for Diamond Drop, the "best" of the three famous troupes.

» HACKERS.

Hackers, whether an individual or an entire team, are employed by corporations, organizations, and even for personal reasons. The web is a chaotic virtual highway of hell, and most people with an elementary education can encrypt and decrypt on at least a basic level. However, if one learns the trade, it can be a lucrative way to earn a living. Hackers are unionized and have all the amenities of a normal job--benefits, vacation time, et cetera. They can work for anywhere from Arby's to burlesque clubs, and take on responsibilities of securing information, accounting, trolling rival companies, and even corporate espionage.

» INRAT.

The Inter-Nebular Regulation Assistance Task Force, or INRAT, also derogatorily known as "gappers", are basically the TSA/Transportation authorities/toll booth operators of long-distance travel in this world (interdimensional gaps in space). The smaller gaps found in Gaia are policed by INRAT, who oversee their use, prevent their misuse, issue visas between nebulae and Earth, etc.

» LAW ENFORCEMENT.

Law enforcement in NWC is standard as it is today--the ranking system, training, and general presence of police has remained the same. However, there are some minor differences. Spacecops do not use vehicles, but rather travel in pairs on hoverbikes and hovershoes.

This law enforcement sub-heading also encompasses the Presidential Guard (formerly the Secret Service), who are tasked with protecting the president and her advisors.

» ALIENS.

Only ten aliens are available for play. All know each other, as they are part of an intergalactic intelligence group that monitors tears in space--the same tears that humanity is using (or abusing, as the aliens might think). Groups of ten each have been sent to cities across Earth in order to monitor human usage of the gaps.

The ten playable aliens are the group assigned to New Washington City. Their task is to observe and report, not to meddle and malign. The aliens are hugely important for plot and require dedication to the game, so those with a casual interest beware!

Humans are not aware of alien presence, and the aliens have a humanoid appearance.

If you are applying for an alien, please read the supplemental information here.
